Water for Food ...
Irrigated agriculture is the largest user of water in Alberta. As water scarcity affects food producing countries elsewhere in the world, irrigated agriculture in Alberta will become more important.
In order to do our part in feeding the world, we have to continuously improve our efficiency, productivity and agricultural practices so that we reduce our environmental impacts on water locally. As water becomes more scarce, we will have to manage it with greater care and effectiveness.
Did You Know? ...
While only 5% of Alberta's farmed land is irrigated, it produces close to 20% of the gross provincial agricultural production. Today's irrigated crops include potatoes, sugar beets, corn, peas, beans and mint, as well as many forage, cereal and oil seed crops.
