More than 50 communities in southern Alberta get access to their municipal water supplies through Alberta's irrigation infrastructure. Add to this, most rural residents get the water they need for their household and livestock requirements from the same irrigation network that delivers their irrigation water.

In most of southern Alberta, there is no affordable alternative for municipalities to obtain their water supplies, except from and through the irrigation infrastructure. The presence of diversions, canals and reservoirs, initially developed for irrigation purposes, makes it possible for communities to have year-round access to stable, safe and secure water supplies.
